SHORT

Shayla McDaniel seamlessly blends hints of R&B with alternative pop.

MEDIUM

“Why do we keep doing these things?” is a question many of us have asked, but very few of us have been able to answer. Out March 19, Shayla McDaniel’s “Let Me Breathe (How to Break Our Hearts)” prompts listeners to examine whether a relationship is challenging but healthy, or tough and unnecessary. The drum beat was written by Peter Mansen of Deep Sea Diver (ATO) as part of their #StayHomeStems series to collaborate with fans during the chaos of recent times.

The Knoxville, Tennessee, based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has performed at Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival, Waynestock, the Cre865 Showcase, Women in Jazz Jam Festival, and live on-air at WUTK 90.3 FM, WDVX 89.9 FM, and WOZO 103.9 FM. McDaniel has also caught the attention of the Knoxville Music Warehouse, who chose her song “I’ll Leave the Light On” as one of the top 16 songs from Knoxville artists in 2016. The following year, fans voted her Knoxville’s Favorite Band of 2017. Her song “Silence” from the EP 26 Letters was voted Best Singer/Songwriter Song in the 2018 Knoxville Music Awards. She was voted Knoxville’s Best Musician/Band in the 2018 Best of Knoxville Awards, nominated Best Female Local Singer/Songwriter of 2019 and 2020 by CityView Magazine, and nominated Knoxville's Best Musician/Band of 2019 and 2020 by Knoxnews readers. McDaniel will continue to play lively shows with her band, as well as intimate solo performances for growing local and regional audiences.

The drum beat was written by Peter Mansen of Deep Sea Diver (ATO) as part of their #StayHomeStems series to collaborate with fans during the chaos of recent times.

“This song was inspired by a relationship that wasn’t good for either of us,” McDaniel said. “Neither of us truly wanted to be there, but we stuck around because it was what we had grown used to.”

About writing the song, McDaniel said, “I had recorded the rhythm guitar over the drum beat that Deep Sea Diver sent, but I still needed lyrics. I wanted to get the main vocal down before I wrote any other parts, so everything would add to or enhance the vocals instead of distracting from them. So I just hit record and started singing what I felt, and fortunately, it came out nicely. I kept it.”
