SHORT

Shayla McDaniel is a singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist crafting guitar-driven alt pop in Knoxville, TN.

MEDIUM

“Flavor” is about being the change you want to see in the world. Building with each section and launching into a soaring chorus, “Flavor” challenges listeners to ask themselves the hard questions.

"’Am I ok with who I am and who I'm becoming?’ is the main theme of this song,” McDaniel said. “For such a deep theme, if I say so myself, this song actually stemmed from a pretty basic thing. I usually only drink water, but I keep a few pops in the fridge. I thought to myself one evening, ‘I’m craving some flavor, some spiciness.’ I cracked open a cold Pepsi, and man, it hit so hard.”

McDaniel liked the line so much that she decided to make a song from it.

The Knoxville, Tennessee, based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has performed at Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival with the likes of Young the Giant and Dave Barnes, Waynestock Festival, Sunset on Central, Women in Jazz Jam Festival, live on-air at WUTK 90.3 FM, WDVX 89.9 FM, and WOZO 103.9 FM, among others. McDaniel has also caught the attention of the Knoxville Music Warehouse, who chose her song “I’ll Leave the Light On” as one of the top 16 songs from Knoxville artists in 2016. The following year, fans voted her Knoxville’s Favorite Band of 2017. Her song “Silence” from the EP 26 Letters was voted Best Singer/Songwriter Song in the 2018 Knoxville Music Awards. She was voted Knoxville’s Best Musician/Band in the 2018 Best of Knoxville Awards, nominated Best Female Local Singer/Songwriter of 2019 and 2020 by CityView Magazine, and nominated Knoxville's Best Musician/Band of 2019 and 2020 by Knoxnews readers. McDaniel will continue to play lively shows with her band, as well as intimate solo performances for growing local and regional audiences.

McDaniel liked the line so much that she decided to make a song about it. “It started off simple, just me and my acoustic guitar, singing about soda. I wanted to make the chords and rhythms kind of monotonous because I started singing about craving flavor and needing spiciness, then the song grew from there.”
